Understanding and Supporting Students Who Struggle with Self-Injurious Behavior

Audience: School professionals working with junior and senior high age students (grades 7-12)

Self-injury is regarded as a physical solution to an emotional problem. In this presentation you will explore the facts around this behavior and factors that put students at risk of self-injury.

In this 2 hour course:

  • Increased your confidence in understanding and supporting students who self-harm
  • Learn how to identify the warning signs of self-injury
  • Explore the differences between suicidal behavior and self-injury behavior
  • Identity the do’s and don’ts of talking with a youth who self-injures
  • Use a case study to practice your approach when talking with a student
  • Discuss ways to engage with families and provide support
  • Review what to do next and how to involve additional supports
